Your Roadmap to Social Media Success

Often businesses that are new to social media are pulled in two directions. On the one hand, you want your company to seem accessible and human, eager to strike up a conversation and keep it going with the community. On the other hand, social media success is hard! It requires time, vigilance and content that engages your target audience and advances your marketing goals. So what is a business owner to do?

Adrianne Gordon, our Director of Marketing and Operations has put together a great road map for businesses looking to begin (or re-route) their social media marketing journey with her article “Effective Social Media” in Capital at Play magazine. It all starts with creating messaging in advance so that you can take the time to craft engaging content.

“WHAT content!?” you might ask.

Adrianne shares,

“The answer is surprisingly simple: A little about you, a little about others, and a little that is just plain fun. Think of social media conversations like cocktail party chitchat. Talk only about yourself and watch everyone suddenly need a fresh drink. Talk only about other people and you miss an opportunity to share your story with others.

The 30/30/30 Rule for Social Media

Adrianne recommends using the 30/30/30 Rule – a phrase you may be familiar with if you’ve ever attended a JB Media Institute session – when you come up with content. This means you’ll spend 30% of your content talking about yourself, 30% talking about others and 30% posting fun and engaging info. This also gives you room to post real-time messaging and responses with the other 10% of your content. Hat tip to Director of Training, Sarah Benoit, the creator of the 30/30/30 Rule.
